About Key Islamic Dates in the Hijri Calendar
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, making precise dates subject to local moon sighting. The key Islamic dates listed above mark the most significant religious observances followed by Muslims across the world.
Ramadan is the holiest month โ a period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual renewal during which the Quran was revealed. Eid al-Fitr marks its end with celebration and gratitude. Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah, coinciding with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
The Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah) is considered the pinnacle of Hajj and one of the most virtuous days in the entire year. Ashura (10th Muharram) marks the day Prophet Musa (AS) was saved from Pharaoh, and is observed with fasting. Mawlid al-Nabi (12th Rabi' al-Awwal) commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
