How is the Islamic date determined?
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months and 354 or 355 days. Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, so dates shift about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Many countries use astronomical calculation (the tabular Umm al-Qura method) while others rely on local moon sighting, which is why the observed date can differ by a day between regions.
