How Islamic Prayer Times Are Calculated

Muslims observe five obligatory prayers (Salah) each day: Fajr before dawn, Dhuhr after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib just after sunset, and Isha at night. The exact time of each prayer depends on the position of the sun, so it changes from day to day and from one city to another.

Fajr and Isha are defined by twilight angles, the point at which the sky begins to lighten before sunrise or darkens after sunset. Dhuhr begins when the sun passes its highest point, Asr is based on the length of an object's shadow, and Maghrib starts the moment the sun sets. Because these depend on latitude and the season, prayer times in northern cities can shift by more than an hour between summer and winter.

Different regions follow different calculation conventions (such as Umm al-Qura, the Muslim World League, or ISNA), which set the precise twilight angles used for Fajr and Isha. Each city page lists today's times along with a full monthly timetable so you can plan ahead.
