How Can Some Cities See the New Day First?
Each new calendar day begins just west of the International Date Line and sweeps westward around the globe. The cities that see it first sit in the world's most advanced time zones, up to UTC+14, so they celebrate New Year and every sunrise hours before most of the planet. Their clocks are 'ahead' simply because of where the date line was drawn.
These early-day places are mostly in the Pacific and the far east of Asia and Oceania. Right now Wellington is among the very first, running at UTC+13:00.
