Why Are the Fasting Hours So Short in These Cities?

When one hemisphere is deep in winter, its dawn-to-sunset fast is at its shortest, especially far from the equator where winter days are brief. Near the equator the fast stays close to 12 hours all year because day length barely changes there. These times are recomputed daily from each city's location.

For travellers and worshippers, the contrast is striking: during a winter Ramadan the fast in some cities can be only around 11 to 12 hours. Today the shortest fasting window among major cities is in Murmansk, at about 12h 11m.
