Cities With the Longest Fasting Hours Today
Ludwigshafen am Rhein has the longest daily fast of any major city right now, running about 20h 01m from dawn to sunset.
Why Are the Fasting Hours So Long in These Cities?
The length of the Islamic fast, from Fajr at dawn to Maghrib at sunset, depends on latitude and the time of year. In the summer half of the year the cities with the longest fasts sit far from the equator, where the Sun rises early and sets late and dawn and dusk stretch long. The figures here are computed daily for each city's latitude and longitude.
This makes Ramadan very different around the world: a fast can last well over 18 hours in the far north during a northern-summer Ramadan, yet stay close to 12 hours near the equator all year. Today the longest fasting window among major cities is in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, at about 20h 01m.
