Overview and Scope

Asia/Calcutta applies to the whole of India, including its capital New Delhi, financial hub Mumbai, technology centers Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and the anchor city Kolkata. It is also used by the Indian Antarctic stations. The zone is one of three IANA zones with offset UTC+05:30, alongside Asia/Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Asia/Kolkata (a link to Asia/Calcutta). The offset places India 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

The standard offset is UTC+05:30, abbreviated as IST (Indian Standard Time). The half-hour offset is unusual; it was adopted in 1906 to align with the local mean time of the 82.5°E meridian, which passes through Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. This offset remains constant throughout the year, as India does not observe daylight saving time.

India has never observed DST on a national level, except for a brief period during the Sino-Indian War in 1962 and the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1965 and 1971, when it was used to conserve energy. However, these were temporary measures and not part of a regular schedule. In the northeast, sunrise can occur as early as 4:00 AM IST in summer, while in the west, sunset can be after 7:30 PM IST. • Sri Lanka: Uses Asia/Colombo, also UTC+05:30, but is a separate zone due to historical differences. Sri Lanka briefly observed DST in 2006 but now stays on standard time.
