About Muharram
Muharram is the opening chapter of the Islamic Hijri year and one of the four 'Hurum' (sacred) months mentioned in the Quran (9:36). It is uniquely honored with the title 'Shahr Allah' (The Month of Allah), signaling its high status in the sight of the Creator. Historically, it was a month where conflict was forbidden to allow for safe travel and pilgrimage.
Significance & Historical Context
Muharram is defined by the themes of liberation and sacrifice. It marks the day Prophet Musa (AS) was saved from the Pharaoh and the day the grandson of the Prophet (PBUH), Imam Hussain (RA), stood against tyranny at the Battle of Karbala. It represents a spiritual 'Hijrah'โleaving behind our lower selves to migrate toward the pleasure of Allah.
Scholars describe Muharram as the station where a believer packs their provisions for the year. Because it is a sacred month, the weight of deedsโboth good and badโis amplified. It is the best month for voluntary fasting after the obligatory month of Ramadan.
Recommended Acts
- Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, or the 10th and 11th.
- Being extra generous to one's family and the poor on the Day of Ashura.
- Engaging in 'Muhasabah' (self-reflection) and setting spiritual goals for the new Hijri year.
