Islamic Calendar Information & Examples

What is the Islamic (Hijri) Calendar?

The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months based on moon phases. It begins from the year of Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. Each year has 354 or 355 days, making it about 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian year.

Islamic Months & Sacred Months

12 Lunar Months: Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah.
Sacred Months (Ashur Hurum): Four months where warfare is forbidden: Muharram (1st), Rajab (7th), Dhu al-Qi'dah (11th), and Dhu al-Hijjah (12th).
Important Months: Ramadan (9th) - month of fasting; Dhu al-Hijjah (12th) - month of Hajj pilgrimage; Muharram (1st) - Islamic New Year.

Examples

Example 1: Islamic New Year
Gregorian: July 16, 622 CE
Hijri: 1 Muharram 1 AH

Marks the beginning of Hijri era
Example 2: Current Era
Gregorian: June 11, 2025
Hijri: ~15 Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 AH
Years Since: ~1403 lunar years
Hijri years are shorter than solar years
Example 3: Ramadan Shift
Ramadan 2020: April-May
Ramadan 2025: February-March
Shift: ~11 days earlier each year
Lunar calendar moves through seasons
Example 4: Calculation Methods
Tabular: Mathematical calculation
Observational: Moon sighting
Difference: ±1-2 days possible
Different methods may give different dates

Important Notes

Islamic calendar is purely lunar - each month begins with the new moon
Years are 354-355 days long, about 11 days shorter than Gregorian years
Islamic dates move backward through Gregorian seasons over a 33-year cycle
Different calculation methods may result in dates differing by 1-2 days
Observational method depends on actual moon sighting and can vary by location
AH stands for "Anno Hegirae" (Year of Hijra) similar to AD in Gregorian calendar

Your Hijri-Gregorian Date Converter

If you’ve ever needed to convert between Islamic (Hijri) dates and Gregorian ones, you know it’s not always straightforward. Whether you're planning for Ramadan, looking up historical Islamic events, or just want to know today’s Hijri date, this tool simplifies that process in a way that’s both quick and surprisingly detailed.

What this calculator actually does

This converter lets you switch back and forth between the Islamic lunar calendar and the solar Gregorian calendar. You can enter a date in either format and instantly see the corresponding date in the other system. But it doesn’t stop at just swapping day-month-year formats—it also breaks down the result with contextual details like whether the Islamic month is sacred, which day of the week it falls on, and how many lunar years have passed since the Hijra.

Why you might want to use it

Islamic events follow a calendar that shifts every year in the Gregorian system. If you’re coordinating prayer schedules, planning around Ramadan or Hajj, commemorating historical Islamic events, or simply want to stay connected to the Hijri timeline, this tool makes that incredibly accessible. You don’t need to memorize moon phase charts or rely on printed calendars anymore.

How to use the converter step by step

Starting with a Gregorian date

  1. Pick the "Gregorian to Hijri" option—it’s selected by default.
  2. Use the date picker to choose your Gregorian date.
  3. Click the “Convert Islamic Date” button.
  4. The Islamic (Hijri) equivalent will appear instantly, along with a detailed breakdown.

Starting with an Islamic (Hijri) date

  1. Switch to the "Hijri to Gregorian" option.
  2. Select a day and month from the dropdown menus, and type in the year.
  3. Hit “Convert Islamic Date.”
  4. You’ll get the Gregorian date in full, including the weekday and formatted version.

Extra settings you can tweak

Not all Islamic date conversions agree exactly, because different communities follow slightly different methods. This tool lets you choose from three calculation types:

  • Tabular/Arithmetical: The standard, math-based estimate—reliable and consistent.
  • Observational: Based on actual moon sightings, so it's closer to how some regions determine Islamic dates.
  • Saudi Umm al-Qura: This is based on Saudi Arabia’s official lunar calendar, often used for Hajj and national observances.

The tool defaults to the tabular method but you can change it anytime from the dropdown menu under "Calculation Method."

What shows up in the results

Once you convert a date, the tool gives you more than just the day:

  • Main result: The full converted date in a clean format
  • Hijri year, month name, and sacred month status
  • Day of the week the date falls on
  • Formatted Hijri date in both English and Arabic
  • Years since the Hijra (useful for historical references)

If you prefer seeing Arabic script, just hit the “Show Arabic” button to toggle the display.

Built-in date updates and live info

You don’t need to manually type in today’s date—the tool fills that in when you load the page. It also shows you:

  • Today’s Gregorian date
  • Today’s Hijri date
  • The estimated date for the next Ramadan

These live features update every minute, so the information stays fresh even if you keep the page open for a while.

Things to keep in mind

Here are a few tips to avoid confusion:

  • Hijri dates shift earlier every year. That’s because the lunar calendar is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian one.
  • You must select all parts of a Hijri date (day, month, year) for the conversion to work. If you miss one, the calculator will prompt you.
  • Different calculation methods can lead to slightly different results—sometimes a day or two off.
  • Be sure the day is valid for the month—some months are 29 days, others 30. The tool includes built-in logic to help, but it's good to double-check.

A simple way to keep your calendar in sync

Whether you’re organizing family events around Ramadan or just curious about today’s Islamic date, this converter takes the guesswork out. With one click, you can line up two very different calendars—and keep your schedule aligned with the one that matters most to you.
