Hebrew Calendar Information & Guide

What is the Hebrew Calendar?

The Hebrew calendar, also called the Jewish calendar, is a lunisolar calendar used for Jewish religious observance. It determines dates of Jewish holidays, Torah readings, and life cycle events. The calendar starts from the traditional date of Creation (3761 BCE) and uses lunar months synchronized with the solar year through a 19-year leap cycle.

The 12 Hebrew Months

📅 Tishrei (תשרי) - New Year, High Holidays
🌧️ Cheshvan (חשון) - "Bitter" month, no holidays
🕯️ Kislev (כסלו) - Hanukkah, Festival of Lights
❄️ Tevet (טבת) - Winter month, fast days
🌳 Shevat (שבט) - Tu BiShvat, New Year of Trees
🎭 Adar (אדר) - Purim, month of joy
🌸 Nisan (ניסן) - Passover, month of redemption
🌾 Iyar (אייר) - Lag BaOmer, counting period
Sivan (סיון) - Shavuot, receiving Torah
☀️ Tammuz (תמוז) - Summer fast, mourning period
😢 Av (אב) - Tisha B'Av, destruction of Temple
🔄 Elul (אלול) - Preparation, repentance

Leap Year System

19-Year Cycle: 7 leap years occur in years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19
Extra Month: Adar I is added before regular Adar (becomes Adar II)
Purpose: Keeps lunar calendar aligned with solar seasons

Important Notes

Hebrew days begin at sunset, not midnight
Years are counted from Creation (AM - Anno Mundi)
Months alternate between 29 and 30 days (lunar cycle)
Cheshvan and Kislev can vary in length for calendar adjustments
New month begins with Rosh Chodesh (new moon)
Calendar was fixed by Hillel II in 359 CE

The Gregorian–Hebrew Date Converter

Whether you’re planning for Jewish holidays, tracking yahrzeits, or just curious about the Hebrew calendar, this tool gives you a fast and clear way to convert dates back and forth between Gregorian and Hebrew formats. It’s easy to use, timezone-aware, and even tells you if a date is a holiday or falls on Rosh Chodesh.

Pick a Date, Choose a Timezone, and Go

The converter supports two main modes: Gregorian to Hebrew, and Hebrew to Gregorian. Depending on your goal, you start with either a familiar Western calendar date or a Hebrew one. There’s a simple toggle for selecting the conversion direction, and once you input the required fields, the result updates automatically—no need to hit enter or refresh anything.

Gregorian to Hebrew Mode

In this mode, you enter a Gregorian date using a calendar picker and select your preferred timezone. The converter uses that input to calculate the matching Hebrew date, including:

  • The Hebrew day, month (in English and Hebrew), and year
  • The day of the week
  • Whether the date is Rosh Chodesh
  • Any major Jewish holiday on that date

Hebrew to Gregorian Mode

If you have a Hebrew date—maybe from a headstone, a religious document, or a holiday—it’s just as simple. Select the year, month, and day from dropdowns. The converter will display the corresponding Gregorian date in your chosen timezone, along with helpful details like the day of the week and holiday info.

Know More Than Just the Date

This tool doesn’t stop at conversion. Each result includes a quick summary of the Hebrew month’s meaning and theme, such as “Month of redemption and Passover” for Nisan or “Month of Hanukkah and lights” for Kislev. You’ll also see if the date falls during a Jewish holiday or a special calendar period.

There’s also a live clock built into the page that reflects the timezone you’ve selected. You can toggle between 12-hour and 24-hour formats using a button—great for matching schedules with friends or family in other regions.

Why Timezones Matter for Hebrew Dates

Hebrew days start at sunset, not midnight. That’s why the timezone selection is more than just a formality. For example, a date near sunset in New York might already be the next day in Jerusalem. The converter takes your timezone into account when displaying both the Hebrew and Gregorian results, so you’re not caught off guard by a day shift.

Tips to Make the Most of It

  • If you don’t see the expected result, double-check the timezone and whether daylight saving time is in effect
  • For Hebrew-to-Gregorian conversions, make sure all three dropdowns—year, month, and day—are selected
  • You can switch modes anytime without losing your inputs
  • The Hebrew year list covers a 100-year span, so you can look far back or forward

Get the Right Date Without the Guesswork

Switching between Gregorian and Hebrew dates doesn’t have to be confusing. This tool handles the tricky parts—like leap years, sunset transitions, and holiday detection—so you can stay focused on what matters: marking time in a way that connects with tradition, schedule, or both.
