Why is there a difference between solar time and clock time?

Quick Answer: Solar time is based on the sunโ€™s position in the sky, which changes throughout the year. Clock time is fixed and divided evenly into hours and minutes. This difference causes solar time and clock time to rarely match exactly.

Solar time depends on the actual movement of the sun, so noon is when the sun is highest overhead. But the Earthโ€™s orbit is elliptical and tilted, so the sunโ€™s position shifts slightly every day.

Clock time, however, is standardized to keep life simple. We use time zones and equal hours regardless of the sunโ€™s exact position. This makes scheduling easier but creates a gap between solar time and clock time.
