What is the origin of the month names?

Quick Answer: The month names mostly come from Roman gods, leaders, and numbers. January honors Janus, the god of beginnings. March is named after Mars, the god of war. Some months like September to December were originally numbered months in the old Roman calendar.

The calendar we use today is based on the Roman calendar. Many months were named after important Roman gods or emperors. For example, July is named after Julius Caesar, and August after Emperor Augustus.

Other months, like September (7), October (8), November (9), and December (10), were named for their position in the old 10-month calendar before January and February were added.
