How to calculate work hours

Subtract the shift start from the shift end to find the elapsed duration, then subtract unpaid breaks. An 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. shift lasts 8 hours 30 minutes. After a 30-minute unpaid meal break, the worked duration is 8 hours.

Overnight shifts

For a shift that crosses midnight, enter the correct Date for both timestamps. A shift beginning at 10:00 p.m. and ending at 6:00 a.m. ends on the following date. Treating both times as the Same date produces a negative or incorrect duration.

Paid and unpaid breaks

Only subtract breaks that should not count as worked time. Paid breaks remain part Of the work total. Rules for meals, rest periods, overtime and rounding vary by workplace and jurisdiction; this calculator measures the entered interval but does not determine legal or payroll treatment.

Decimal hours

The result includes clock-style hours and minutes plus decimal hours. Decimal hours are convenient for timesheets, but always apply the required rounding policy consistently.
