Lorsque sa famille déménage de leur maison à Berlin vers une étrange nouvelle maison en Pologne, le jeune Bruno se lie d'amitié avec Shmuel, un garçon qui vit de l'autre côté de la clôture où tout le monde semble porter un pyjama rayé. Ignorant le destin de Shmuel en tant que prisonnier juif ou le rôle que joue son propre père nazi dans son emprisonnement, Bruno se lance dans un voyage dangereux à l'intérieur des murs du camp.
