Pendant que la Seconde Guerre mondiale fait rage, le jeune Mahito, hanté par la mort tragique de sa mère, est transféré de Tokyo à la paisible maison rurale de sa nouvelle belle-mère Natsuko, une femme qui ressemble étrangement à la mère du garçon.
